Baselworld
Baselworldis a trade fair for the watch and jewellery industry and is held annually in Basel in the spring. Producers from the watch, jewellery, gemstone and related sectors exhibit their innovations here.
The fair is overwhelming. The exhibition stands are huge. It is not unusual for an exhibition stand to be over 500m2 and 3 storeys high. Equipped with their own ventilation, kitchen and sometimes even a lift, the buildings surpass themselves in their perfection and design. The highest demands are placed on this fair.

The project: Plant wall in bookshelf
For Carl F. Bucherer’s trade fair stand, a plant wall was to be built into a huge 9 m high bookcase. The wall itself had to be 8.5m by0.6m. We alsodecided to mount the wall pre-cultivated. So that we can create an absolutely perfect planting.
No easy task. We decided to divide the wall into 3 elements, each2.60m high, to make pre-cultivation, transport and installation easier.
Carl F. Bucherer is a Swiss watchmaking company based in Lucerne (Switzerland) that manufactures mechanical watches for men and women in the luxury segment. Since the year it was founded in 1888, the company has grown steadily and now has boutiques all over the world.

Pre-cultivate
As mentioned, the plant wall should be installed pre-cultivated. Pre-cultivated meansthat we place small plants on the wall and let them grow until the wall is completely green. The advantage is that the plants are already part of the wall when they are installed. They are already integrated into the small plant wall «ecosystem«, which makes them more resistant. In addition, the plants are cheaper, as small plants are cheaper than the big ones. The last important advantage is perfection. With pre-cultivation, you can control the result very well. Withthe right light and fertiliser, perfect greenery can be created.
A few data on pre-cultivation:
Plant wall system: V-Panel from «Vivit«(custom-made)
Size: 3 panels each 2.70m x 0.60m
Gesamtfläche: 5,1 m2
Plants: Soleirolia soleirolii (Bubikopf) 40 pieces
Lamps: The lamps are placed 1m from the wall and burn 24 hours a day.
3x Plant light bar VLed from «Vivit» (VLED-BAR-108W-G)
1x VLed light panel from «Vivit» (VLED-PAN-045W-G)
Planting day: 15 February 2018

Plant walls in daylight
But the plant walls are not yet finished. The plant carpet is still quite boring. Therefore, various other plants are now planted in the walls to get more structure. I call this process: «spiking«. You can find out what «spiking« is and how it works in my article: 10 tips for greening plant walls.
Die Endbearbeitung der Wand erfolgte 3 Tage vor der Montage, damit sich die zusätzlichen, auffälligeren Pflanzen in das bestehende Ökosystem der Pflanzenwand einfügen können.
The assembly
On the day of installation, we took down the walls and placed them on a specially made frame. All 3 walls could be transported stacked on top of each other without any problems. We then set off for Basel in a van.
In the exhibition hall, we first installed all the technology and mounted the mounting brackets for the plant wall. Thenwe hung the 3 plant walls on top of each other in these strips and connected them to the irrigation system.
Finally, we perfected the greenery by shaking out the plants again and adding plants to the transitions between the plant walls.
The wall was installed with 3 people in 2 hours (minus the waiting time at the fair).
